We performed several dances including Ganesh Vandana, pure classical Kathak, dance on Bollywood song and a dance on Indian folk song. We also did lecture demonstration on Kathak dance. The program ended with Sara lee employees learning steps to perform dance on popular song “Jai Ho”.

At Chicago City Hall, Chicago, IL, to kick-off month long celebration of Asian American Heritage month, our dance school performed a dance at Chicago Mayor Daley’s reception at City Hall. The dance was performed by Gauri Jog and her student and characterized by beautiful choreography, music and costume. The dance showed two friends dancing with joy on the onset of spring.

At Hindu Temple, Arora, our students participated in this annual classical dance festival. We performed two dances, one depicting the story of Lord Krishna and Yashodha Maiyya and in the second dance our students danced on Taal Ektaal. The second dance was all about intimate relations and a bond between mother and daughter.

At the beginning we performed a dance to pray Lord Ganesha to take his blessings. Then five of our students performed on the song “Shantakaram” telling the importance of Saraswati Puja during the festival of lights (Deepavali).

We presented starting with the shloka “Om Sahana Vavatu” and then the song from Hindi popular movie, Andhi “Is Mod Pe”. Through this song we showed that the foundation of our relationship should be like concrete or solid, not like glass which will break easily.

At Navy Pier, Chicago, IL, NBC TV invited us to present Indian dances at their Travel Expo. We presented four dances at Navy Pier expo hall. We started with invocation to Lord Ganesh, followed by fusion of Indian Classical Dance Kathak and Jazz. Then we performed pure classical Kathak in Taal Dhamar with 14 bits and was performed by Gauri Jog. We ended the program with “”Deep Nritya”” celebrating the festival of lights (Diwali or Deepawali). This dance involved holding lights in both hands, on head and dancing on the edge of plates. This requires lot of balancing skills and concentration.

Our group presented footwork and that thrilled the audience. We also presented a Bollywood dance, Silsila Hai and Chandi Ke Chacha. The program ended with fast music with Tarana.

At Grand Hyatt, Orlando, FL, Gauri Jog participated in “Modeling and More” competition. She performed Tarana in pure Kathak style and won the championship. There were more than sixty finalist and Gauri won the first prize, a great pride for us.

More than 450 people witnessed “Fire – the Fiery Tale” show – to depict the evolution and importance of fire: Agni an intense element of nature. More than 40 dancers participated in the program.

The highlights of this program include Mira Bhajan and a beautiful dance based on a semi classical gaze. At Aronoff Center for the Arts, Cincinnati, OH. This acclaimed choral multi-media theater production featured a 150 – member choir, a chamber orchestra and an ensemble of Indian instruments. To the packed audience of 2600 our school was invited for a dance fusion with Bharatanatyam. “Shanti” was conceived and created by Kanniks Kannikeswaran, a visionary musician, composer and music educator with several recordings, productions and scores to his credit.

At Addison Village Hall, Addison, IL. This was a day long multi-cultural program arranged by Addison village and our school was invited to represent dances from South Asian countries. A group of twelve girls presented three dances representing the cultures in that region. The dancers rendered Kathak and combination of other styles, stimulating an aesthetic experience in the spectators. This was indeed a good opportunity for us to show what the Indian dancing is all about.

At Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago. On the occasion of Dussehra, the Hindu Temple arranged dance ballet on Ramayan. We performed three major items. The first dance described Sri Ram’s childhood by eight students. The interaction between king Dashrath and queen Kaikayee was represented by Jugalbandi between Kathak and Bharatanatyam. Our school also received much appreciation for staging “Lezim” dance, a popular folk dance from Maharashtra.

At Prairie Center for the Arts, Schaumburg, IL. The basic idea of the program was to portray life of brave queen of Jhansi. There were more than 40 dancers in the age group of four to fifty and they performed Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Ballet, and folk dances. The program began with Ganesh Vandana followed by performances from budding dancers who are in the various stages of learning. The main part of the program described the childhood of the queen, her growing up, and coronation with various types of folk dances. The confrontation between the British and the queen in the final battle was depicted as a Jugalbandi in Bharatanatyam and Kathak styles.

As you probably know Rajasthani folk music is very vibrant and represents harsh realities of the region as well as heroism of the kings. A dance critic described this program as “good work on choreography characterized by dazzling costumes and vibrant music”.

More than 20 girls participated performing dances based on classical and Bollywood music. One senior quipped “the most exciting happened in my life”. The program had notable items like “Dhingali”, Bhajans, pure Kathak, Bollywood dances, “Tabla” duets, classical vocal. Many dance items had live music and others had pre-recorded Indian and orchestral music. Overall the program had a great combination of dance, music and drama. It provided opportunity for promising young boys and girls to show their budding talent.
